The current status: officially announced, not yet live

You're planning next quarter's ad budget for the German market, and someone in the meeting asks the question that's reached most marketing teams by now: can we run ads in ChatGPT in Germany yet? The short answer: not yet. The longer answer: the launch of ChatGPT ads in Germany is officially announced, and the signals suggest it's coming faster than most teams expect.

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI announced the expansion of its advertising program to Germany, France, Ireland and Singapore. The trade publication Digiday reported the announcement and documented the job postings that came with it: OpenAI is currently building a dedicated ads team in Munich. What the company has not yet named is a concrete launch date for the German market.

For advertisers, that creates a rare situation: a new ad channel announcing itself weeks in advance. Companies that use the time can run campaigns on day one, while their competitors are still clarifying the basics. Companies that wait will compete with everyone else.

The self-serve Ads Manager "Advertise in ChatGPT" opens

Two observations matter for the German launch. First, the gap between an announcement and the actual opening has been consistently short: the US pilot went live roughly three weeks after the January announcement, and later waves followed within weeks to a few months of being named.

Second, OpenAI does not treat Europe as a bloc. The UK went live in June, while France and Germany were only announced in July. Expect a staggered country-by-country start rather than one European launch day.

Since July 22 there's also the self-serve Ads Manager: advertisers in the opened markets create campaigns themselves, set budgets, and target by conversation context. According to explainx, Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint ran campaigns at launch. The technical infrastructure Germany will use is already built.

When will ChatGPT ads launch in Germany? The realistic assessment

There is no official date, and honest analysis should say so. What exists are three solid signals, all pointing the same way.

Signal 1: The Munich hiring. OpenAI is currently filling client partner and customer success roles based in Munich, plus a regional ads leadership role for EMEA. Companies don't hire local sales teams to let them sit idle for quarters. The job profiles point to a launch measured in weeks rather than quarters.

Signal 2: The infrastructure is finished. With the self-serve Ads Manager live, the technically hardest part of the rollout is done. Opening new markets is now mostly a question of localization, legal review and sales, not product development.

Signal 3: The market is too big to postpone. The UK, France and Germany together account for roughly 62 percent of Europe's digital ad revenue. With the UK live and France announced alongside Germany, OpenAI has little reason to hold back the continent's largest ad market for long.

One factor works the other way, and it explains why Europe trails the US: the regulatory framework. GDPR and the Digital Services Act set higher requirements for ad labeling, data use and transparency than most other markets. Opening countries one at a time, with local teams, fits a company that wants to clear those bars per jurisdiction. It doesn't argue against an early launch, but it explains why there's no pan-European date.

Our assessment from these signals: a launch within weeks to months is realistic, and a 2026 launch is very likely. As soon as OpenAI names a date, you'll find it in our continuously updated ChatGPT ads in Germany hub.

The three ways to buy, once Germany opens

From the markets already open, the access routes are known. Advertisers have three:

  • Directly through OpenAI: managed by the local ads team, relevant mainly for larger budgets. That's exactly what the Munich team is being hired for.

  • Through ad-tech partners: OpenAI works with Criteo and StackAdapt, among others. For companies already running campaigns through those platforms, this is the lowest-friction route.

  • Self-serve through the Ads Manager: build, budget and manage campaigns yourself. Open today in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan and South Korea.

For the German launch, expect at least the direct route and the partner route on day one. Whether self-serve opens immediately or shortly after hasn't been communicated.

Who can advertise? The registration rule

One detail gets overlooked in most discussions, and it decides everything for companies targeting Germany: OpenAI currently admits advertisers whose company is registered in a market where ads are already live.

A company registered in Germany cannot enter early through the US or the UK. Ad account access follows the company's registration, not the campaign's target audience. For German-registered companies, the German launch is the real start date, regardless of how international the business is.

For international companies, the same rule cuts the other way, and this is worth spelling out. If your company is registered in the US, the UK or another live market, you can run ChatGPT ads today, and build real campaign experience while your German-registered competitors legally cannot. Whether you can point campaigns at German-speaking users before the German market formally opens is a targeting question OpenAI hasn't publicly detailed; what's certain is that the operational experience, the intent research and the creative learnings transfer to the German launch directly. Multinationals with entities in live markets hold the only genuine head start this channel offers.

The consequence for everyone else: no provider registered only in Germany has run a domestic ChatGPT campaign. Agencies advertising ChatGPT ads experience for the German market have earned it in other markets or not at all. It's fair to ask which.

The edge that is buildable from Germany today is preparation: audience intents, landing pages, measurement and budget sign-off. What that looks like concretely is our guide to preparing for ChatGPT ads in Germany.

What the live markets reveal about the German launch

The US market has been running since February and delivers the only hard practice data. Four findings matter for German planning.

Ads reach a defined slice of users. Advertising appears only for logged-in adult users on the free tier and the low-cost Go subscription. Plus, Team and Enterprise stay ad-free. The inventory is large but finite, which matters for price development.

The answer stays untouched. Ads appear as a clearly labeled box below the answer and never change its content. An ad buys visibility in the conversation context, not a recommendation from the model.

The pricing model rewards relevance. Billing follows cost-per-engagement: costs arise only when users interact with the ad. Early benchmarks from the US market are collected in our analysis of what ChatGPT ads will cost.

Formats start simple and get more interactive. At launch, ads consist of a headline, a description and optional imagery. OpenAI has announced interactive formats, including product configurators and embedded demos inside the ad unit. The details are in our guide to ChatGPT ad formats and targeting.

Advertiser demand compounds fast. Per Digiday, the advertiser count recently doubled within a month, and OpenAI courts test budgets rather than pushing annual contracts. The early window of cheap, uncontested conversation contexts closes quickly in every market. There's no reason to expect Germany to behave differently. What the early entry means in money terms, and how the channel compares to the incumbents, is the subject of ChatGPT ads vs. Google Ads.

What you can do before the German launch

The waiting period isn't downtime. It's the actual window for building an edge, and four work packages are fully doable today.

First: check your visibility in AI answers. ChatGPT ads appear around conversations about your category. Brands that also show up organically in those conversations profit twice: the ad meets recognition instead of a cold first contact. Whether and how your brand appears in AI answers takes minutes to check with our free AI Visibility Check.

Second: define conversation intents instead of keywords. ChatGPT targeting runs on intent categories and conversation contexts, not keyword lists. The groundwork sits in your own data: sales calls, support tickets and existing search data reveal the situations in which your audience talks to ChatGPT about your category.

Third: build landing pages and measurement. Users arriving from a ChatGPT conversation expect a precise continuation, not a generic homepage. Fast, topically matching landing pages and clean tracking from ad to lead decide whether the channel can even be evaluated after four weeks.

Fourth: clear budget and approvals internally. The least glamorous item is usually the slowest. A test budget for the first four to eight weeks, defined success criteria and leadership sign-off take longer in most companies than any technical preparation. Starting that process after the launch announcement costs exactly the weeks in which the channel is cheapest.

Finish these packages before the launch and you're running campaigns on day one, collecting real data from week one.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT ads in Germany

Is there an official launch date for ChatGPT ads in Germany?

No. OpenAI announced the German expansion on July 9, 2026 but named no date. Previous rollouts went from announcement to launch within weeks to a few months, and the ongoing Munich hiring suggests the shorter end of that range.

Why isn't Germany live yet when the UK already is?

OpenAI opens markets individually and launched the UK in June 2026, ahead of the other large European markets. Germany, France, Ireland and Singapore form the next announced wave. The higher regulatory overhead in the EU, from GDPR to the Digital Services Act, is the most plausible reason for the staggered approach.

Can a German company advertise through another country before the launch?

No. OpenAI requires advertisers to be registered in a market where ads are live, and access follows the company's registration, not the campaign's target market. A German-registered company can enter neither through the US nor through the UK.

My company is registered in the US or UK. What does the German launch mean for us?

You can advertise today in your home market and build experience that transfers directly to Germany at launch. For targeting German audiences specifically, watch OpenAI's market-by-market rules; operationally, the intent research, creative testing and measurement setup you build now is the head start.

Who sees advertising in ChatGPT?

Logged-in adult users on the free tier and the Go subscription. Plus, Team and Enterprise remain ad-free. Ads are clearly labeled and never alter the answer itself.

How are ChatGPT ads billed?

Per engagement (CPE): costs arise when users interact with the ad, not per impression. Official German pricing doesn't exist yet; early benchmarks come from the US market.

Is it worth waiting for the launch instead of preparing now?

Waiting forfeits the only edge currently available. Since every German-registered advertiser starts on the same day, preparation decides: defined intents, finished landing pages, working measurement and an approved budget.

Be ready on day one

The German launch of ChatGPT ads is no longer a question of if, only of when. The companies that collect data in the first weeks learn the channel while engagement prices are low and conversation contexts are unclaimed, an advantage nobody can retroactively buy.

We're preparing a limited number of companies for the German launch: AI visibility, intent map, landing pages and measurement, ready before OpenAI flips the switch. If you want to be among them, get the launch briefing. We'll reach out the moment the German market opens, and you decide whether to start.
